109 MPH in a 50: Driver Arrested, Passenger Takes It Too Far
16 views
A traffic stop in Lee County, Florida begins after deputies say a vehicle was traveling 109 mph in a 50 mph zone and nearly collided with another vehicle after entering oncoming traffic.
What begins as an investigation into the driver quickly becomes something much bigger. While deputies investigate the driver for possible impairment, his passenger repeatedly intervenes, becomes increasingly concerned about what will happen to her car, and eventually finds herself at the center of the encounter.
The driver was arrested for DUI and unlawful speed. According to the case outcome presented in the footage, the DUI charge was later dropped as part of a plea agreement, while he pleaded no contest to the unlawful-speed charge.
The passenger was charged with felony battery on a law enforcement officer and disorderly intoxication. She later pleaded guilty to both charges, with adjudication withheld, and received 36 months of probation.
I react to and discuss the bodycam footage as the traffic stop unfolds, including the officers' decisions, the behavior of those involved, and how an already serious situation continues to escalate.
